Next Matter You Know is a musical written by American writing duo Joshua Salzman and Ryan Cunningham.

Side by side Thing Yous Know looks at a time in life where ane twenty-four hour period you lot wake up, and instead of a hangover, you lot take a task. Instead of a fling, you take a alive-in girlfriend. And instead of naïve dreams, you take reality.[ii] Theatermania describes the show as "Life is like a bartender - it'll only requite you so many shots. Next Thing Yous Know is the story of four New Yorkers waking up from their invincible twenties and confronting adulthood in the city that never sleeps."[3]

History and productions [edit]

Salzman and Cunnigham first met in New York Academy's graduate program in musical theater writing, where they began writing the songs that became their outset musical I Love Yous Considering.[iv]

Adult with director John Simpkins [five] the musical was start presented as a vocal bike at New York University[6]

The show is now[ when? ] in development with both Encore Theatre Company in u.s.a. as part of their Musicals in Development Initiative [seven] and Sell A Door Theatre Company in the Britain.[8]

The show was put on in June 2011 at CAP21. Information technology was directed by Terry Berliner, breathtaking blueprint by Andy Yanni, costume design by Julia Broer, lighting design past Brian Tovar, sound design past John Emmett O'Brien, and musically directed by Kurt Crowley.[ix] [10] The show starred Lauren Molina (Waverly), Adam Kantor (Darren), Heath Calvert (Luke), and Lauren Blackman (Lisa).

The cast album was recorded with Lauren Blackman (Lisa), Colin Hanlon (Darren), Jay Armstrong Johnson (Luke), and Patti Murin (Waverly).[11]

The bear witness premiered in Paris, France in 2015 by American Musical Theatre Alive [12] staged by Tolgay Pekin featuring Lauren Berkman and Marion Préïté (Waverly), Frédéric Brodard and Vinicius Timmerman (Darren), Quentin Bruno (Luke) and Miranda Crispin (Lisa) with musical direction by Mathieu Becquerelle. The bear witness connected its Paris run throughout 2016.[13]

Plot overview [edit]

In the CAP21 production, the story follows Waverly, who lives in Manhattan and begins with her getting a promotion from the police force business firm she works at, going from temp to total-fourth dimension while too bar tending at dark. A result of this is the loss of her acting career, and the thought of losing it is hard for her to deal with. On top of that, her playwright boyfriend Darren does not understand why information technology is so hard. His reaction causes their breakup, and she begins a fling with the casanova Luke, who works in sales where Darren temps.[14]

  • Waverly - A woman in her belatedly 20s. Extra who tends bar to make ends see. Has struggled to build a career for herself equally a performer since arriving in the metropolis. Now has a non-performing solar day-job she loves, and a man she adores – merely when they both wait for her to move to the next level, it scares her to decease. (Belter upward to F5)[15]
  • Lisa - A woman in her tardily 20s. Candid musician who performs at their local dive bar and Waverly'south best friend. Once dated Darren before coming out, and is now struggling to discover the right woman. Faces the difficult decision as to whether or not she should motility away from the city, start a new chapter, and leave her New York life behind. (Mezzo-Soprano).
  • Darren - A man in his late 20s. Heart-searching and talented nonetheless charming author who dreams of settling down, while still pursuing his creative endeavors. Thoughtful and loving guy, only at times very cocky-involved and distracted. Struggles to balance the life he wants with the woman he loves. (Baritone with falsetto)[16]
  • Luke - A homo in his late 20s. Charismatic playboy who has everything he could ever desire, but has a lot of growing upward to do. A man-kid, he has no intention of settling down – until a woman sneaks into his middle, and he'due south forced to decide between the dreams of a young cad and the life of a homo. Reception [edit]

Catherine Rampell of the New York Times said the cast was "amiable and understated, ideal for CAP21's black box rigged as an intimate theater in the round." She also noted the neat performance of Kantor, but said the blocking was at time didactic and some of the songs were forced or forgettable. She positively concludes "the show still achieves a well-nigh effortless resonance — particularly with whatever 20-something who has recently moved to the Large Pond that is the Big Apple."[18]
